Summary Papers and correspondence of captain Hector McNeill, commander of the frigate BOSTON during the Revolutionary War. Collection includes an autobiography of his early life and his capture by Indians during the French and Indian War (written in 1773); a list of the crew of the frigate BOSTON, 1777; a manuscript copy of the journal kept by Benjamin Crowninshield in the BOSTON, 21 May - 21 August 1777; and sketches of the engagement of the frigates BOSTON and HANCOCK with the H.M. ships RAINBOW, FLORA and VICTOR, 7 July 1777. Correspondence includes letters from McNeill to the Council of Massachusetts, 1777 and to his wife, Mary Wilson McNeill, 1778-1779; two letters from Henry Knox to Mary McNeill concerning her late husband's financial affairs, October 1787; and a letter from Joseph Foster to Charles W. Gray, 10 December 1908, concerning the publication of the McNeill papers.
