Summary Log of the ship SACHEM (Henry Bancroft, master) on a voyage from Boston to Gibraltar, 29 February-26 March 1820; to Indonesia, 19 May-20 August 1820; to the Cape of Good Hope, 16 April-13 June 1821; and from Saint Helena to Boston, 29 July-12 September 1821. The first page reads: "Journal of a voyage from Boston to Gibraltar from thence to different Ports in India on board Ship Sachem Captain Henry Bancroft Master / Winslow W. Sever Kingston." The log was probably kept by Sever. Included are notations of course, position, weather, wind, and work on the ship, as well as a description of a storm off the Cape of Good Hope in June 1821 that damaged the ship's rudder. An entry dated 24 July 1821, written at Saint Helena, discusses the recent death of Napoleon Bonaparte and his life under exile. The volume also contains several log entries for the ship PAGODA (Henry Bancroft, master) on a voyage from Boston to Canton, China, 10-18 May 1822, written in the same hand, with a brief narrative dated 6 Jan. 1823.
