Abstract This compilation is the first attempt to present important documents relating to the history and performance of choral literature written in the United States. The topics addressed in these selections, which are widely varied, may be grouped in three categories: reflections on the nature and purposes of choral music by major contributors to the repertory, critical responses to landmark works, and instructions on performance practice. Historical overviews introduce each section of the book, which is divided by chronicled period, and a lengthy bibliography of further writings on the subject will provide additional benefit to the reader.
