| Abstract | The use of the word masterwork is a subject under much debate. Nonetheless, there are qualities to such pieces that some might loosely define. Such a piece might show thorough exploration of its own soundworld, of its own ideas. It might draw both player and listener in as it unfolds. It might suit the instrument, and yet be a challenge for that instrument at the same time. What defines a masterwork now? The eleven flute solos in this anthology span half a century--from 1973 to 2021--and touch on numerous musical styles. The works are most similar in their use of clear development and melodic ideas or sounds (and in the use of the flute's tonal ability to fill a room, even with a single line of music). Most of these works are suited for performance, displaying a range of the flutist's musical ability. Two were written for competitions. All of them were written with clear musical intent and a deep knowledge of the flute. |
