Abstract Messiaen said that Xenakis was 'one of the most extraordinary men that I know ... a hero, unlike any other.' His music is elemental, primordial, yet it could not have existed at any other time. It comes out of the most personal experience of the horrors of the age, and from an intense engagement with the conceptual world of modern architecture and higher mathematics. His musical thinking from the start incorporated many of the preoccupations that have since become fashionable, such as chaos and game theory, fractals and probability, transformed into a music that has an energy and violence both disturbing and exhilarating. These conversations reveal a man of uncommon integrity, with a breadth of artistic empathy that is unique in the music of our time.
