Abstract This book is the first to be published in English about Witold Lutosławski and his music. A documentary illustration of his creative world up to the present day has seemed to be more important than a technical and stylistical analysis. For this reason the book consists chiefly of notes and commentaries on his works, most of which have been written by the composer himself. The book also contains 42 pages of musical examples and the complete song texts to 'Five songs', 'Trois Poèmes d'Henri Michaux' and 'Paroles tissées'. The catalogues of works are an attempt to collect all available information about his compositions in a chronological and systematic way and have been completed in close co-operation with the composer.
