| Abstract | "This book examines the Algerian political system during the four mandates of Abdelaziz Bouteflika (1999-2019), whose time in office began with promises of restoring Algeria to regional promise after a civil war but descended into corruption, unconstitutionality, and authoritarianism. Based on extensive fieldwork, it shows how the Algerian ruling coalition developed a mode of government based on the management of a longstanding crisis-defined by continuous socioeconomic unrest, "residual" terrorism, and the widespread rejection of political authorities-and the potential collapse of the country. Paradoxically, this mode of government also led to a genuinely revolutionary situation, which materialized in the 2019 movement (Hirak) and resulted in Bouteflika's resignation.
