Abstract "This book examines the Algerian political system during the four mandates of Abdelaziz Bouteflika (1999-2019), whose time in office began with promises of restoring Algeria to regional promise after a civil war but descended into corruption, unconstitutionality, and authoritarianism. Based on extensive fieldwork, it shows how the Algerian ruling coalition developed a mode of government based on the management of a longstanding crisis-defined by continuous socioeconomic unrest, "residual" terrorism, and the widespread rejection of political authorities-and the potential collapse of the country. Paradoxically, this mode of government also led to a genuinely revolutionary situation, which materialized in the 2019 movement (Hirak) and resulted in Bouteflika's resignation. Featuring research done before and after these events, this book chronicles the origins and aftermath of an uprising that changed the face of Algerian politics"-- Provided by publisher.
