Abstract Although there have been many biographies of Verdi, the author has succeeded in unearthing new and important material, and has shown the man and his life as he revealed himself through his correspondence. Earlier biographers did not have access to these letters, and while their work is admirable in itself, it suffers from the lack of this knowledge of the composer's reactions and thought processes. His picture of the composer is therefore more round and complete, and in addition to a shrewd assessment of Verdi's place in music, we now have given some insight into the working of his mind and know his opinion of men and events. We can see through the composer's own eyes how contemporary events shaped his work: we are shown the 'moral greatness of a man who was scrupulous in the observance of his duty, whose honesty was not bounded by conditions and circumstances. ... Had Verdi not been a composer, he might have forfeited his claims to remembrance, but he would still have been a great man'.
