| Abstract | "Deafness and blindness may be congenital or caused by brain injury, infection, neurological disorders or neurodegenerative processes associated with aging. They can limit people's ability to navigate and engage with the physical and social environment. Chronic auditory and visual sensory deprivation can also have deleterious effects on neuroplasticity and brain development. This can result in different types and degrees of cognitive impairment over the lifespan. Auditory and visual prosthetics can enable people with these sensorineural deficits from birth to acquire some degree of hearing and vision. They can enable those with these deficits occurring after years of normal auditory and visual functions to recover some degree of them. Auditory prosthetics bypass damage and dysfunction in the inner ear, stimulating auditory nerves to process and produce a meaningful representation of sound and the speech signal in the brain (O'Donoghue, 2013; Shannon, 2012a). Visual prosthetics bypass damage and dysfunction in the retina or primary visual cortex (V1 or V2 areas) to process and produce a meaningful representation of three-dimensional spatial information"-- Provided by publisher. |
