Abstract "More than half a century ago, governments worldwide began a trend of introducing various forms of privatization into public education systems. This development, part of the New Public Management (NPM) movement, was heavily promoted by the administrations of the United Kingdom and the United States and was not limited to state education, but rather extended to all other social sectors. The NPM doctrine emphasized placing the customer at the centre of state activities, decentralizing responsibilities to the level of service provision, holding government officials accountable to the community, and evaluating outcomes instead of inputs (Hood 2001). As a result, the traditional distinction between private and public sectors in education based on ownership and funding of schools became less clear. This volume examines the different facets of the transformation in public education providing an overview of pro-privatization changes and developments in the education sectors of various countries around the world, some with education systems that have been well-studied and others that have received less attention"-- Provided by publisher.
