| Summary | This qualitative study investigates the sense of inclusion experienced by underrepresented and minoritized students in college outdoor recreation programming. The research aims to identify factors that hinder or facilitate the sense of inclusion among these students and to propose recommendations for program improvement. The study utilizes a multi-phase approach: an open ended survey and phenomenological semi-structured interviews. From those data, emergent recommendations were formulated and shared with key inquiry partners. Findings from the study illuminate critical insights into the experiences of underrepresented students in outdoor recreation settings. Key themes emerged from the data analysis: the importance of creating a welcoming environment, the need for clear communication, implementing small gestures of support, and addressing intersectionality. The data highlights the need for inclusive practices that acknowledge diverse identities, experiences, and backgrounds. Based on these findings, the study offers practical recommendations for practitioners and administrators involved in college outdoor recreation programming. These recommendations include fostering inclusive environments through intentional programming, promoting diversity and representation, and implementing strategies to support students' sense of inclusion. By understanding and addressing underrepresented students' unique needs and experiences, programs can strive towards greater inclusivity and accessibility for all participants. |
