| Summary | Higher education administrators have shown a growing interest in addressing African American college students' retention and graduation rates in recent years. Although higher education institutions have witnessed a significant increase in African American student enrollment, concerns persist regarding their retention and graduation rates, which lag behind those of other ethnic groups. This study explores the underlying factors contributing to the lower retention and graduation rates among African American students. It also delves into socioeconomic status as a critical determinant of these disparities. African American students' socioeconomic challenges have historically hindered their academic progress and involvement in college life. The innovation at the heart of this research lies in developing a comprehensive advising and mentorship program. This program addresses the unique challenges of low socioeconomic status among African American students, aiming to enhance their retention and graduation rates. By adopting this comprehensive approach, we aim to create a supportive and inclusive academic environment that empowers African American students to overcome the barriers they face. Through this study, we aspire to contribute to a more equitable and Successful educational journey for East Carolina Community College African American students. |
