Summary ABB Power T&D Company Incorporated (ABB) expressed its desire to develop a work cell concept to manufacture their six hundred volt line of transformers. The advantages they saw as important were reduced work-in-process (WIP), less material handling, total quality control, less manufacturing space, efficient use of labor, and reduced cycle time of the product. The author concentrated this study on designing, implementing, and evaluating a work cell concept to manufacture ABB's six hundred volt line of transformers. The focus of this study was to determine if a work cell concept would reduce the work-in-process on both the TPR and plastic case line of transformers.
