Summary Five manufacturing firms in eastern North Carolina were studied in order to gain insights into the design and implementation of work cells for medium sized companies. The data gathered from the case study groups was used to develop a sequence of events which would serve as a guide in determining the facility needs and requirements for work cells. A major finding of the study was that early employee involvement was essential for successful implementation. Recommendations for future research include studies on employee involvement and quality issues.
