Abstract "Examines eighteen contemporary issues including sleep, depression, sexual identity matters and racism. Utilizing the biopsychosocial model, the book is divided into sections on biological or physical problems, mental health diagnoses, and social issues. Each of the eighteen chapters has reviews of major reseearch studies, as well as the impacts of major technological innovations such as smartphones and social media sites. New technology has created cyberbullying and problematic internet use as well as psychosocial issues, with a chapter devoted to each subject. In the section on biological issues, there is a chapter on obesity, which affects at least twenty percent of adolescents and impacts teens in many ways. The mental health crisis in America's adolescents is rapidly escalating, with more young people having symptoms of depression and suicidal thinking which five chapters are devoted to. Discrimination through racism and poverty as well as toward LGBTQ groups is covered in four chapters. With over 750 references cited, the book delivers a contemporary overview of major adolescent issues and how they relate to one another, including the impacts of technology, the pandemic, and war on youth."--Back cover.
