| Abstract | This book grew out of a doctoral dissertation and examines the life of the English classical guitarist Julian Bream and uncovers a man who is not only a musician but a profound thinker too. This book details Julian Bream's early years and his father's struggle to nurture his son's precocious talent. These challenges are illustrated through letters that Henry Bream wrote to Henry Appleby, an ardent supporter of the classical guitar who did his utmost to promote the instrument in England. Appleby saw in Julian a figure who could capture the public imagination as a home-grown virtuoso. The book also details the troubles that developed between Appleby, Bream senior and Boris Perott, the head of the Philharmonic Society of Guitarists who was also keen to promote Julian. The dispute between Appleby and Henry Bream regarding Julian's use of a 10-string Maccaferri guitar on loan by Perrot nearly derailed Julian's debut recital. |
