Abstract "So opens the groundbreaking reframing of American history by Nikole Hannah-Jones and the New York Times, written to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the arrival of the first "twenty and odd" Africans who were captured, transported under horrific conditions, and then sold to the governor of Virginia. The 1619 Project justifiably and rightly centers the reality and subsequent consequences of slavery in the formation and subsequent growth of this country, a debt for which there has yet to be a full reckoning. The historical trauma of slavery continues to emerge and re-emerge through our lived experiences of mass incarceration, poverty, food and medical deserts, and poor educational systems. Black people are chronically grieving"-- Provided by publisher.
