| Abstract | "The Shaping of American Higher Education combines historical perspective with in-depth coverage of current events to provide an authoritative, comprehensive account of the history of higher education in the United States. The series tracks trends in student access, faculty professionalization, curricular expansion, institutional growth, secular governance, public finance, research, and outcomes. Much has happened in American higher education since the 2nd edition of this text published in 2009. The 3rd edition is an opportunity to modernize and streamline, add discussions of contemporary issues such as diversity, equity, and inclusion, and incorporate perspectives of postsecondary institutions that are not present in the first two editions. The updated edition will include content extending to 2022, incorporating analyses of the major changes in society since 2009, as well as evolutions in institutional organization and priorities, students, faculty, the curriculum, institutional cost and other finances, and outcomes of education. The new edition will include updated analyses of how institutions of American higher education are responding and adapting to the fourth industrial revolution, how colleges and universities are working to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion, the increasing prevalence of public-private partnerships and college/university involvement in economic development initiatives, how various types of institutions are shedding historical precedent to educate students and train workers in new ways, and how credit for prior learning, self-paced learning modules, micro-certifications, and other educational credentials are allowing colleges and universities to move away from their historical attachment to the credit hour as the main unit of measuring student progress. As the previous edition did, the 3rd edition will conclude with several predictions for the future and questions for the reader to consider"-- Provided by publisher. |
