Abstract Gioacchino Rossini's career as a composer is one of the most dazzling in the history of opera. High-spirited and witty, a musical prodigy, he composed at an astonishing rate, preferably surrounded by a group of chattering friends. It is said that he once wrote an overture in the time it took to boil a bowl of rice. Rossini's talents were quickly recognized, and before he was twenty-five years old, he had written The Barber of Seville, one of the most famous and popular comic operas of all time. His position as a composer was firmly established. Much of Rossini's life was lived within the lively and flamboyant atmosphere of the theater, and the author re-creates with enthusiasm and respect the theatrical and temperamental character of the composer and his brilliant successes in the major capitals of Europe. In his later years Rossini moved beyond the realm of comic opera, composing the loving and mature William Tell and religious works. He became a musician worthy of being classed among the greatest of his kind. A specialist in French music and literature of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, he has contributed many articles to magazines and to encyclopaedias of music.
