| Abstract | Collection consists of a signature book of Confederate prisoners at Fort Warren, Mass., that James C. Mallison kept while imprisoned there (1861-1865). The volume contains signatures of inmates from the Carolinas, Virginia, Georgia, Tennessee, Louisiana, Mississippi, Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri, New York, California, and Canada. Often accompanying the signatures are the date, military rank, regiment, former profession, and original poetry. The regiments mentioned include: the 2nd Regiment of the N.C. State Troops (also known as the "Washington Grays," which became 1st N.C. Artillery Regiment, Co. K); the 7th Regiment, Co. A, of the N.C. Artillery; the 7th Regiment, Co.'s A, D, E, and I of the N.C. Volunteers; the 10th Regiment, of the N.C. State Troops; and the 5th Regiment, Co. A, of the Georgia Volunteers. The N.Y. Cavalry, Confederate States Navy, and United States Navy are also mentioned with many people listed as "late of U.S. Navy." When dates of arrest are listed, a description usually follows that includes the time and place of arrest. These arrest descriptions usually concern political prisoners from Maryland. |
