Abstract ""Chiang Kai-shek's Critical Years, 1935-50" sheds new light on Chiang Kai-shek's decision-making when his political influence was at its peak. Drawing more fully on Chiang's own writing than existing studies in English, seven chapters by six authors analyze his responses to critical challenges. The work advances academic and public understanding of a figure who has remained enigmatic. Moreover, it explains the successes of a leader often remembered for massive failure. Contributions to the volume shed new light on Chiang Kai-shek's most significant decisions, including his decisions to wage war against Japan in 1937, and against the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) in 1946. It also provides updated analysis of his efforts to accommodate the CCP, of his relations with representatives of the United States during the war against Japan, and on how he succeeded in maintaining his position as President of the Republic of China after 1949. Chiang Kai-shek's key decisions dramatically shaped China's future, while their repercussions affected the course of global history. The sharpened sense of Chiang's agency that the volume also provides a valuable foundation for analysis of the military and political institutional structures that he helped to build."-- Provided by publisher.
