Abstract Account of the delegation of the Dutch East India Company led by Pieter de Goyer and Jacob de Keizer to the emperor of China, based on the notes and illustrations of Johannes Nieuhof who served as steward to the group. !b The delegation sought to persuade the Emperor to open up Chinese ports to the Dutch East India Company. The first part of the book contains a detailed account of the journey from Canton to Peking and back, and all of the events experienced by the delegation. The second part contains a comprehensive description of China, one of the earliest glimpses Westerners had of the Chinese, and according to Wikipedia, a major influence in the popularity of "chinoiserie" in the 18th century.
