Variant title Levinas between ethics and politics
Abstract This work provides both an insight into the evolution of Levinas's work and a clear, critical perspective on the shortcomings of the use of phenomenology in ethics. As well, Bergo demonstrates the difficulties for postmodern thought found in the relationship between ethics and politics. Now available in paperback, this volume traces the unfolding of Levinas's phenomenology into his hermenutics of subjectivity, focusing on two major works, Totality and Infinity and Otherwise than Being, or Beyond Essence with a view toward sketching the destiny of a phenomenology of ethical intersubjectivity. This work provides both an insight into the evolution of Levinas's work and a clear, critical perspective on the shortcomings of the use of phenomenology in ethics. In addition, Bergo demonstrates the difficulties for postmodern thought found in the relationship between ethics and politics.
