Abstract "This volume, authored by leading political scientists, proposes a territorial approach to inequality and redistribution, informed by political economy, political geography, and a comparative understanding of federalism and multilevel governance. It is one of very few attempts to consider the question of redistribution from this perspective. Contributors highlight the importance and specificity of territorial inequality, identify the social forces that work for and against territorial redistribution, document the role of political parties as active agents in the articulation of space-based claims and responses, and consider the relevance of fiscal federalism and federal institutions in shaping redistribution policies. They analyze the effect of decentralization and federalism on policy outcomes and on public preferences, the determinants of the allocation of authority between different orders of government and how it affects inequality, as well as the relationships between fiscal federalism, political forces, and inequality. While the volume considers different federations or quasi-federations, it also attends to the unique position of Indigenous peoples."-- Provided by publisher.
