Abstract "The Global 1923 and the Treaty of Lausanne examines one of the twentieth century's most controversial international agreements: the peace settlement that ended the Long Great War of the Eastern Mediterranean. Drawing on a rich array of archival sources from Britain, France, Italy, Turkey, Greece, the United States, Armenia and beyond, this volume reconsiders the 1923 Lausanne Treaty within evolving global and regional power contexts. It reveals how diverging peace aims within the so-called united allied front underscores the degree to which the negotiators themselves considered the Eastern Question as the framework to shape the settlement. In doing so, it foregrounds the role of shifting alliances, military power, business elites, and the efforts to shape public opinion. The book discusses the role of imperialism and the Eastern Question discourse at the Lausanne Peace Conference and reassesses the different strategies pursued by the delegations involved. Although the Soviets were formally involved in resolving only one issue at the Conference, the book highlights how Turco-Soviet relations shaped the settlement. Similarly, the book examines how Kurdish, Armenian and Arab grievances were neglected and how these developed into some of the most important issues in Middle Eastern politics. The American influence, even if the US delegation had only an observer status, is addressed in a broader political economical setting. The Global 1923 and the Treaty of Lausanne reveals how the entanglement and the contestation at Lausanne continues to inform our contemporary politics today"-- Page 4 of cover.
