Abstract Berlioz's opera tells the story of a political prisoner and his fianče facing the medieval Vehmic courts in Germany. The composer destroyed most of the work after failing to have it produced, but the popular overture and some musical fragments survive. The plot, which revolves around rescue from oppression and wrongful death sentences, was written by Berlioz's friend Humbert Ferrand.
