| Abstract | "How algorithms limit your access to information and determine your worldview - and what you can do about it! We are all in an information bubble, whether we realize it or not. The content that fills our bubble is the product of all the likes, clicks, and shares we have made online. Every time we click on something, the internet's algorithms assume we like it--and give us more and more of the same. Inside our bubble, we are isolated from things we don't like and only see the things we do like. We gradually lose sight of perspectives and points of view that are different from our own. This book helps kids recognize the deliberateness of social media, understand how they got inside their filter bubble, and motivate them to expand their world view. As a result, they will think more critically about everything they read online and consider how they can embrace points of view that are different from their own. The book pulls back the curtain on some of the digital products and media young people use. It shows how deliberately game creators and social media owners are in pursuit of their users' money, time, and attention. It outlines the personal and societal dangers of being in a bubble and being unaware of it. It will also show young people that their information bubble is not just online. The friends we choose, the activities we pursue, and even our beliefs are shaped by the information we access. Burst Your Bubble! helps kids become aware of their bubble and understand how it limits their perspective of the world. Then it will help them to burst that bubble!"-- Provided by publisher. |
