| Abstract | Acclaimed both for the beauty of his voice and the rare intelligence with which he uses it, Nicolai Gedda is perhaps the most versatile tenor of the twentieth century. He is equally at home in opera and song, and as a master of nine languages and a wide range of musical styles, he has a vast repertoire that includes more than sixty roles and a large body of oratorios. He has made more than 200 recordings over his forty-year career. This autobiography--candid, perceptive, unpretentious--is the first full-length book in English on Nicolai Gedda. It includes anecdotes and observations on a variety of subjects, from literature and film to marriage and parenting, in addition to musical matters. For the first time he discusses the emotional experience of meeting his birth mother only after he reached adulthood, and reveals the accompanying self-reflections about his identity. |
