| Abstract | This book addresses interpretive issues in the 28 pieces of Mompou's four-volume Musica Callada (1959-67) within the context of musical, literary, and philosophical influences. Mompou's piano miniatures reflect the concentrated expression of his primitivista philosophy. The title Musica Callada loosely translates as Silent Music and is taken from the Spanish mystic and poet St. John of the Cross. The author considers harmonic and melodic observations; poetic and philosophical references; Mompou's thoughts on the work; and recorded performances by Herbert Henck, Joseph Colom, and the composer/pianist himself. The author's purpose is to explain Mompou's style and aesthetic and to promote his compositions as a more frequent choice for piano recitals. |
