Abstract This history of the Cavendish Laboratory in its early years shows how the Cavendish evolved from a relatively small university teaching laboratory to a world center of experimental physics. It describes and analyzes the participants in the Cavendish's development in terms of their contributions to that development. B&w historical photos of key figures are included.
