| Biographical note | Walter Lowry Small, Jr. (1916-2004) of Elizabeth City, N.C. was a rear admiral in the United States Navy and graduate of the United States Naval Academy, Class of 1938. Small served during World War II, commanded many naval vessels, was Personal Aid to Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz (1947), commanded the Middle East Force (1967-1968) and several submarine fleets, including the Submarine Force U.S. Pacific Fleet (1968-1970). |
