Abstract A collection of essays in memory of William C. Holmes (1928-1999), a distinguished scholar of seventeenth-century music and of the works of Verdi, who for many years was Professor of Music at the University of California at Irvine. The volume contains studies by friends, colleagues, and former students ranging in subject matter from fifteenth-century dance, to the music of Rossini, Verdi, and Stravinsky, to the performance practice and patronage of seventeenth-century opera, all reflective of Holmes's wide-ranging interests.
