Abstract The second edition of this book is a substantive expansion and updating of the original with major additions that include an enlarged performance practice section for beginning students. Also included are additional performer, maker, and seller listings, and a new chapter on the distinct acoustics of keyed bugles. Yet another new chapter on bugle manufacturing reflects the author's careful research of instruments documented by the signatures of specific firms, and comparison of them with unmarked examples. The information in this chapter enables readers to recognize various regional and manufacturing styles and to engage in informed speculation on the origins of undocumented key bugles. This book puts the best of current research on the instrument into book form and provides the collector, performer, and serious music student with a clear picture of the instrument's history, repertoire, and technique.
