Abstract Haydn's "The Seven Last Words of Christ" continues to provide musical and spiritual nourishment for millions in a format that links its seven main movements to spoken meditations on the seven final utterances of Jesus. The Vermeer String Quartet, known for performances of this masterpiece throughout the world, has been joined by some of the foremost religious figures of our time for meditations on the seven last words. This book offers more than sixty written meditations, along with seven spoken meditations as part of the complete musical performances on CD. On a second CD, brief musical examples illustrate Richard Young's discussion of Haydn's composition and the connection of the music to the scripture text that inspired it.
