| Abstract | "Maria Callas is the most fascinating operatic personality of our time. She is considered by many to be one of the most fabulous women in the world. What is her story? Is she the firebrand of the newspaper headlines? Is she the greatest singer in the world? What is she likes as a woman? Who is she? In this intimate portrait of the opera world's most dynamic and controversial personality, the true story of her life is finally told. This is the story of a woman who, by superhuman drive and effort, an unmatched will to succeed, and God-given talent, triumphed over a bitter, introspective childhood to reign as prima donna assoluta of Italian opera. Here is the true picture of the international celebrity, the queen of opera, the deeply loved and worshipped and intensely hated CALLAS, darling and bane of every opera director in the world. This is the story of a woman of burning ambition and relentless drives, of powerful emotions, of deep-seated insecurities, and, also, a woman capable of magnificently human actions."--Dust jacket. |
