Abstract "In the hope that the enjoyment of these universally beloved works might be increased by a definite knowledge of their literary background, this booklet presents the stories of twenty-five of them as well as brief biographical sketches of their sixteen composers. The overtures to be thus treated have been chosen on the basis of their popularity as shown by the frequency with which they are performed, their adaptability to both band and orchestra, and the amount of interesting material available concerning them. The contents have been limited to the works of composers whose names begin with one of the first thirteen letters of the alphabet, it being planned at some future date to publish a second series which will deal in similar fashion with the overtures of Nicolai, Offenbach, Rimsky-Korsakow [Korsakov], Rossini, Saint-Saens, Schubert, Smetana, von Suppe, Thomas, Tschaikowsky [Tchaikovsky], Verdi, Wagner, Weber and Wolf-Ferrari"--Title page.
General note"An interpretative analysis of twenty-five standard overtures together with biographical sketches of their sixteen composers"--Cover.
