Trustees

The East Carolina Board of Trustees was established by the legislative act of 1907 that created the East Carolina Training School. The board of trustees was authorized to act for the state as a corporate body, “to acquire and hold property …to manage and conduct” the operation of the school and “do all other things necessary for the carrying out of the provisions and purposes of this act.” The law also specified in some detail the procedures for electing nine citizens from eastern North Carolina to serve on the board of trustees, chaired by the state superintendent of public instruction. Following the 1972 reorganization of higher education in North Carolina, primarily authority became vested in the UNC system board of governors, and the ECU board of trustees assumed a more supportive role.

The Records of the Board of Trustees includes meeting minutes, biennial reports, correspondence, governing documents, committee meeting minutes, and audio recordings of meetings.
